This Saturday, the Catholic community in Zimbabwe will gather to celebrate a remarkable milestone: the Golden Jubilee of Father Patrick Makaka, SJ, the oldest black Jesuit priest at Our Lady of the Wayside Parish in Mt. Pleasant, Harare.
The Golden Jubilee celebration will include: a Thanksgiving Mass led by the Jesuit Provincial of the Southern Africa Province, Fr. Leonard Chiti, SJ, and concelebrated by fellow priests; tributes from family, friends, and community members; and reflections on Father Makaka’s 50-year journey and contributions to the faith.
Fifty years ago, Father Makaka answered the call to the priesthood, and today, we honour his unwavering commitment to serving the Lord and the community.
As the assistant chaplain and teacher at St. Ignatius College, the jubilarian has demonstrated tireless efforts and selflessness, providing guidance, comfort, and spiritual nourishment to countless individuals.
His dedication to the faith has been an inspiration to many, and his legacy continues to shape the lives of those he’s touched, which inspired some to also respond to their call to the priesthood.
As we gather to honour this remarkable individual, we express our deepest gratitude for his service and unwavering commitment to the Lord. He has served in various capacities, including at one time as the Rector of St George’s College, among others. We wish Father Makaka many more years of fruitful ministry and good health.
