The Vice President of Zimbabwe, Dr Constatine Chiwenga has acknowledged and
praised the Catholic Church’s contribution in the development of Zimbabwe
Speaking at the diaconate and priestly ordination held at St Georges on July 30, the Vice
President and Minister of Health, Dr Constantine Chiwenga said Zimbabwe’s
government acknowledges the relationship between the State and the Catholic Church
and greatly appreciates the achievements of the relationship.
The ordained were Deacon Kudakwashe Kariviro C.Ss.R and three Jesuit priests, Frs
Ashton Mugozhi, Tanaka Mashiche and Emmanuel Banda.
Dr Chiwenga told the congregation that he is ‘pleased by the work done by the Church in
preaching the gospel which transforms men and women into responsible and upright
citizens marked by good character and conscience.’
“Our relationship as the Church and government has deep roots in our history, the Church
has always been present at every moment of our struggles”, said Chiwenga.
He also said the duo continues to ask God to continue blessing Zimbabwe with many
priests, brothers, sisters, and religious leaders who work towards building nation and
peace.
He urged the newly ordained to preach the gospel which help societies to shun social
immoralities.
“Your work and vocation is a holy one, serve the people of God with love and zeal.”
“As newly ordained priests go out and join hands with the community to lead society
against harmful practices such as drug abuse, child marriages, domestic violence, and
immorality among others”, said Chiwenga.
He gifted the newly ordained with priestly vestments such as stoles, chasubles, and priest
bags each, and a ram for His Grace, Archbishop Robert Ndlovu.
Chiwenga said it is heartwarming to see young men committing themselves to the service
of the church and people of God by becoming priests.
He said they have been part of the flock and are now shepherds in the service of the Lord.
Also in attendance were the Women’s Affairs, Small and Medium Enterprises
Development Minister, Honourable Sithembiso Nyoni.
