As a Province we are thankful for his vocation, his work and his presence during all these years.
We congratulate him in the celebration of this jubilee and ask that he may remain open to God’s grace for many more years to come.
Brian was born in Poole, England, on 4 October 1940, at the height of the war. His father was a reporter on the Daily Mail. He did his schooling with the de la Salle Brothers in London and joined the novitiate in 1959, on 7 September.
After philosophy at Heythrop, Brian studied Chemistry at Campion Hall, Oxford and theology
at Heythrop after the college moved from its silvan location in Oxfordshire to London.
Brian did his regency at St Ignatius College, Chishawasha, where he taught science. After
ordination in London in 1974, he worked for a while at St Peter’s Mbare before returning to St
Ignatius in 1975. The following year found him at St Michael’s Mhondoro.
After his tertianship at St Beuno’s, Wales, he stayed on in England for a while to teach at an
‘Approved School’ in Southport. He then returned to the then Rhodesia and soon moved to
teach and do research at Kanye, Botswana, where he made his final vows in 1980.
That same year he moved to Silveira House where he did research into ‘Appropriate
Technology’ developing a number of experiments in solar ovens, methane gas digesters and
fruit drying.
In 1993, Brian moved to St Boniface, Hurungwe, as an assistant pastor, before moving back to
Silveira House in 1997. In 2001, he moved to Zambuko House, a home for street children in
Hatfield, Harare.
Brian was based at Emmaus, Harare from 2006 until he moved back to St Peter’s Mbare, his
present residence, in 2010. Recently he has had a serious surgery and is recovering at Richartz
House.
All his life Brian has been a close follower, and commentator, on current events and has
published a great deal in a variety of magazines and booklets. His writings and research filled
about six boxes in the Zimbabwe archives.
Father Brian, we thank you very much for all your many years of dedicated ministry. On behalf
of the whole Province, we use Father General’s words “in praying that the Father who placed
Saint Ignatius with His Son grant you many blessings in this time of jubilee.”
